The viaduct that spans the Big Sioux River and train tracks in central Sioux Falls. Jonathan Ellis / The Dakota Scout

Outside of Falls Park, the Cathedral and the downtown skyline, some of the most recognizable features in Sioux Falls are the viaducts that cross the Big Sioux River, connecting east and west in downtown.

But after decades of use, the state of South Dakota says the end is near for both bridges. Up first is the 10th Street viaduct, followed by its newer sibling on 11th Street.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation is hosting the second of two public open houses to discuss the future of those bridges, and more specifically, what will take their place. The second open house takes place May 14 at the Holiday Inn City Centre from 5 p.m. to 6:30.
