Planned hyperscale data center moving into South Dakota's largest city
Officials: Taxpayers not on the hook for running utilities to Gemini Data Center's 164-acre site
The first hyperscale data center in the area took another step forward this week with its preferred site being annexed into the city of Sioux Falls — but only after the company behind the project promised taxpayers won’t foot any of the bill.
City councilors on Tuesday signed off on bringing into city limits the swath of land near Rice Street and Veterans Parkway that could host servers for some of the world’s most prominent tech companies.
Annexed at the request of landowner Gemini Data Center SD LLC, the cropland is not contiguous with Sioux Falls city limits, and the company had to promise to cover the cost of extending utilities to the site in order to earn the blessing of both the mayor’s office and city councilors.
