New city sales tax touted as relief for South Dakota property owners

PIERRE — South Dakota cities are another step closer to collecting on a higher sales tax rate.

But lawmakers helping advance a measure that would give municipal voters the option to impose a new tax in their communities say House Bill 1245 will help ease pressure on local property taxpayers.

That’s because right now, too many cities are paying down debt for high-cost infrastructure and capital projects with revenue derived from property tax collections, according to Rep. Greg Jamison and others behind the multi-faceted legislation enabling cities to cover those costs with a new sales tax.
