More than half of kids locked up in Sioux Falls on psychiatric drugs

Minnehaha County has a new contract to keep kids locked up.
County commissioners in August approved a contract between the Juvenile Detention Center and the Midwest Wellness Institute to provide psychiatric services to youths housed at JDC.
Midwest Wellness will provide psychiatric evaluations and manage psychiatric medicines. The contract calls for Midwest Wellness to provide at least one day of service each week at $150 an hour, as well as other services that might be provided.
Nate Ellens, assistant director at JDC, told commissioners last month that of the 33 youths at the facility on Aug. 16, 19 were taking at least one psychiatric drug. Some are on as many as five drugs.
