The number of inmates at the Minnehaha County Jail remains flat, pushing back plans to expand the number of beds in the downtown Sioux Falls facility by at least another year.

Sheriff Mike Milstead, in his 28th year in the job, told county commissioners on Tuesday that they had planned to add 150 extra beds on the still-empty upper floors of the jail by this time, but they haven’t had to do it.

He said the inmate population mirrors the numbers from a year ago, so there’s no need to open the new floors and hire more correctional officers.
