Minnehaha County jail needs 'emergency' space after influx of jailed parolees
State Department of Corrections gets stern with parolees who violate conditions of their release
The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Department has opened a new floor of jail space in response to an influx of parolees who have committed new offenses and are awaiting transfer to the state prison system, Sheriff Mike Milstead told commissioners Tuesday.
The third floor – UC3 – has sat unused since the jail was expanded. The space was always intended to house future inmates as the county’s population grew, and it was in the department budget to start using the space in July.
But the need for that space became an emergency, Milstead said, after the Department of Corrections changed its policy on re-committing offenders who break the law while on parole. Where the county averaged eight parole-only holds prior to the policy change, the jail currently had 50 parole-only holds Tuesday, a number that had been as high as 80.
