As communities across America gear up for a summer marking the nation’s 250th birthday, how much exposure students have had to the nationwide patriotism push largely depends on where they go to school.

Grassroots organizations, local governments, states and community groups nationwide are embracing America250 festivities commemorating the birth of the United States and the world’s longest-enduring constitutional republic.

But as students head into summer break ahead of a season of Independence Day parades, picnics and fireworks, exposure to the semiquincentennial — and enthusiasm surrounding it — varies widely among South Dakota school districts.
