Lincoln County faces tough questions about courthouse roof repairs
Cost to replace damaged beams, trusses and other parts 'substantial' according to engineering report
Lincoln County commissioners took no action this week after hearing that unfinished 2020 roof repairs and new snow-load rules could leave taxpayers facing a costly structural decision at the current courthouse in Canton.
The county still needs more engineering work before it can seek construction bids or decide whether to repair, reinforce, or replace parts of the roof system. The roof report also raises a larger question for commissioners: how much more money to put into the old courthouse, and whether to repair, remodel, or move away from parts of the aging building.
Robbie Veurink, a structural engineer with Midwest Engineering, told commissioners his review found concerns similar to those raised in 2020.
“To my knowledge, none of this was done back in 2020,” Veurink said.
