Lincoln County Commission taps former lawmaker to fill vacancy in split vote
Residents lobbied for candidate with ties to agriculture, rural district
CANTON — Lincoln County commissioners picked former state lawmaker Herman Otten on a 3-2 vote Tuesday night to fill the District 2 seat vacated by former Commissioner Betty Otten.
The decision gave the board a new member before commissioners turned to a budget fight over roads, reserves, and possible tax increases.
Otten, a cousin-in-law of Betty Otten and cousin of state Sen. Ernie Otten, defeated Duane Carlson after one round of voting. The 59-year-old from Lennox served for 12 years in both the House and Senate. He resigned from the House last year.
