Americans call ourselves the land of the free. For us, freedom is a significant source of pride and security. We love it so much that it’s in our national anthem. In the “Star Spangled Banner,” we sing about being the land of the free. Due process is an important part of that freedom. It lets people challenge imprisonment or detention by giving them a chance to prove their innocence. Ignoring due process can open the door to people being put in jail or detention centers when there is no reason for them to be there.
