In harkening Nike — just do it.
Some eight years ago I was approached by friends who suggested I should run for office. They asked, "Have you ever thought of running for city council?" Yes, it had crossed my mind, but wasn't sure if it was my time. Possibly sometime down the road.

At the time the thought was, “gosh, am I ready?” Although I was engaged in the community, via boards, chamber, committees and other opportunities, what did I know about city politics? Don't you have to be well versed in everything before you run for office? I spent a few weeks digging in, asking the questions, seeing if this was feasible, and if I was up to the job. The rest, as they say, is history.
A few things I've learned in my eight years of public service is you don't have to know everything. On the contrary, you just have to care, be engaged, listen to constituents, lean on staff and know who to turn to when a complicated subject comes forward and you have a lot to learn. Everybody has their particular sweet spots and talents, but it is critical in elected office to work well with the diverse folks of different backgrounds and add in your own touch, views and common sense.
You can do it, too. I'm the poster boy for "if I can do it you certainly can." Jump in, take a stand, make your mark. Sioux Falls needs, you and you won't regret it, I promise.
The Good Lord has taken me by the hand and led me in a number of directions I could have never imagined. His leading me to the leadership table of this remarkable City has been as high an honor as any of the blessings bestowed. I recommend it highly.
