Weitzel-Boyer, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, peacefully passed away on Monday, January 27, 2025, at Ava’s Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Joy was 74 years old.
Joy Diane Weitzel was born on September 12, 1950, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Melvin and Dorothy (Irwin) Weitzel. She attended public school and graduated from Storm Lake Public High School in 1968.
After graduation, Joy continued her education and earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Westmar University in Le Mars, Iowa. Following college, Joy moved to California and worked for a mortgage bank. While living in California, she met her future husband, Matt, and became an avid square dancer.
On August 31, 1990, Joy married Harold Matthew “Matt” Boyer at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. The couple resided in California until moving to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1991. Joy worked as a collection agent for Citibank in Sioux Falls, retiring in 2010 after 19 years with the company.
In retirement, Joy and Matt enjoyed traveling and visiting places such as Hawaii, Jamaica, Alaska, and the Bahamas. They were active members of Asbury United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls, where Joy participated in the church choir and band.
Joy is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Matt Boyer of Sioux Falls; her cherished sister, Susan (Michael Trus) Weitzel-Trus of Parchment, MI; her nephews, Michael Trus Jr. of Brigham City, UT, and Tyler Trus of Kalamazoo, MI; as well as her aunts and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Dorothy Weitzel, and her mother-in-law, Joy R. Boyer.
A memorial service will be held at 9:30 AM on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Asbury United Methodist Church, located at 2425 S. Western Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD. A visitation will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, February 7, 2025, at Asbury United Methodist Church. Joy will be interred at Buena Vista Memorial Park in Storm Lake, Iowa.
