Jackley warns that marijuana still illegal after Trump orders reclassification
South Dakota among 40 states with medical cannabis as Trump expands research into health benefits
Attorney General Marty Jackley reacted to President Trump’s decision to reclassify marijuana Friday morning, emphasizing the drug remains illegal in South Dakota for recreational purposes.
Trump signed an executive order Thursday that reclassified marijuana from a Schedule I drug under federal regulations to a Schedule III drug. Schedule I drugs include the strongest, most addictive drugs – including heroine. Advocates for declassifying marijuana have argued for decades that cannabis, which grows naturally, did not belong among Schedule I narcotics.
The decision to reclassify cannabis allows medical research into the effects of cannabinoids. The president’s executive order noted that one in four adults in the United States report suffering from chronic pain and that six in 10 people use medical marijuana for pain management.
