Hundreds of South Dakotans are running for Legislature. Here's the list
Primary elections take place on June 4
South Dakota’s June primary elections will feature 44 contests between Republicans looking to land a seat in the state Legislature, while just one of 35 legislative districts will see Democrats competing for a spot on the fall ballot.
More than 200 candidates have qualified candidacies in the 2024 state House elections where all 70 seats in the South Dakota House of Representatives and 35 spots in the state Senate are up for grabs.
Positions in both chambers come with two-year terms.
For House races, two candidates are sent to the Legislature from each district, while one senator is elected from each district.
House contests with more than two candidates of the same party will trigger a primary race. Senate races with two or more candidates of the same party are also subjected to the primary nomination process.
Though several candidates are currently unopposed in their district’s election, third-party candidates and Independents have until April 30 to file candidacies.
