PIERRE – The clash between drag queen show organizers and the conservative public has once again reached the state Capitol.

Some Pierre residents have been raising concerns about a pride event being put on this weekend.

And their primary focus is on a “family-friendly drag show” that is part of the festivities.

Saturday, the Pierre Area Center for Equality (PACE) is hosting its annual “Pierre Pride” event at the Drifter’s Event Center in Fort Pierre.

A schedule published online for the event says that in addition to the family-friendly drag show, they’ll have a drag story time event, and a separate drag show only open to those older than 18.

“It’s basically like a talent show with lip syncing and fun costumes,” said Bree Oatman, a board member with PACE. “The costumes tend to be more conservative and the songs and choreography are like what you would see at a High School musical dance number.”

But reassurances from event organizers aren’t enough to satiate the concerns of some area citizens.
