Gilbert “Gib” Bassett, 92, died on Monday, April 21, 2025, at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, April 27, 2025, at the Humboldt Community Center (201 S Main St, Humboldt, SD 57035.) In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the VA Adaptive Sports Program or the VA Ride Share Program.
Gilbert Dolly Bassett was born on March 25, 1933 in Dolton, South Dakota, to Fred and Gertrude (Harms) Bassett. In June of 1951, Gib joined the United States Navy, proudly serving his country until his honorable discharge in 1955. On March 1, 1957, Gib married the love of his life, Barbara McDonnell. The couple was blessed with three children: Kim, Troy, and Mark. Gib and Barb shared 65 years together until Barbara’s passing in 2022.
Gib worked as a body shop worker in the automotive industry until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years and enjoyed participating in the Adaptive Sports Program through the VA. Gib loved playing cards with his family and also watching all their games at the West Central Sports Center.
Grateful for sharing his life are his children, Kim (Mike) Regnier, Troy (Colleen) Bassett, and Mark (Catherine) Bassett; grandchildren, Matthew (Tera) Regnier, Seth (Katy) Regnier, Travis (Kayla) Bassett, Tyler (Melissa) Bassett, Tara Carruthers, James Bassett, Ryan Bassett, and Lily Bassett; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Gib was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Gertrude Bassett; wife, Barbara Bassett; brothers, Bob Bassett, Joe Bassett, and Gene Bassett, and sister, Bertha Tieman.
The family would like to thank the staff at Edgewood Assisted Living, VA Community Living Center, and VA Home Health Care. Their care and dedication will not be forgotten.
