“A comedy of errors.”

That’s how university and higher education officials continue to describe an ongoing bottleneck in the federal student loan application system that’s holding both colleges and their prospective students hostage.

And though the first overhaul in decades to what’s known as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is meant to make the process simpler for the millions of American families that rely on higher education assistance, glitches and setbacks in the rollout of the new system have tens of thousands of applications in holding.
