Don was born on November 22, 1926, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to John and Catherine (Leichtman) Zweep. He grew up on a farm near Garretson where he experienced the dust storms and trials of rural life in the 1930’s. While working alongside his father and brother Lloyd, he developed his love and passion for farming. After graduating high school, he worked many jobs while also farming. These included John Morrell, a township assessor, the USDA statistical service, and seed delivery for DeKalb Seeds. Don loved working with people and paperwork never bothered him.
On June 1 of 1950, Don married the love of his life, Flora Mae Voegeli, whom he met when they both attended a high school musical. They moved to a farm west of Garretson soon after. Don and Flora were blessed with four children, Jerry, Fae, Renee, and Connie. The family was involved in 4H and loved camping at the fair. Don had a passion for music and spent many years in different men’s chorus’. Don and Flora were very active and held many positions in their church. In 1984, Don and Flora started traveling to Texas during the winter. Don retired from the farm in 1988. Don and Flora lived life to its fullest in retirement; traveling to Europe, camping, square dancing, singing, making stained glass, and visiting family. All of these activities kept him busy. In 2004, Don and Flora moved to Bethany Meadows in Brandon. In 2016, Flora was called home. Don lived his last years at Legends on Lake Lorraine in Sioux Falls.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Flora, son Jerry (Colleen) Zweep, daughter Fae (Ron) Rogen, and brother Lloyd Zweep. He is survived by daughters Renee (Ken) Wolf, Connie (Terry) Johnson, sister Devonna Etrheim, 12 grandchildren, and 37 great grandchildren.
