Documentary offers inside look at homeless challenges in Sioux Falls
’24 Hours on 8th Street’ focuses on corridor where several services helping this population are located; proceeds from State Theatre showings to help nonprofits
Rudy Navarrete woke up one day with a thought. What would it be like to show up in Sioux Falls and not have a home?
Navarrete, who runs a food truck and catering business, lives in a neighborhood where homelessness is front and center on a daily basis. The Eighth Street corridor in his eastern downtown neighborhood is the spine for various services to the homeless in the area. And while some in Sioux Falls avoid the area, Navarrete has a fondness for his neighborhood, its food, its sights and sounds and its people.
Navarrete’s curiosity about the lives of those who struggle without homes was the spark for an idea to create a documentary about what it would be like to live for 24 hours on the streets of Sioux Falls without resources.
