Corps of Engineers releasing less Missouri River water for barge, river traffic
Storage in dam system nearing point where 'minimal service' would be provided amid drought
Water stored in the Missouri River is approaching a point where the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would provide “minimal service” for barge and river navigation.
As of March 15, the date used to determine how much water is stored in the system to gauge releases for the first half of the navigation season, the Missouri River Mainstem Reservoir System held 49.5 million acre-feet, the Corps’ Omaha office announced Monday. At 49 million acre-feet, the Corps is required to provide enough water for “minimal service.”
The first half of the navigation system at the mouth of the river in St. Louis started April 1.
