While some hunters prefer Labrador retrievers or spaniels as their field companions, a Great Dane and a pit bull-coonhound mix are a Day County hunting guide’s bird dogs of choice.

Levi Sanderson, a guide at Hidden Hill Lodge near Roslyn, said he trained the pair of rescue dogs to hunt birds by appealing to their natural instincts.

Sanderson is a Claremont native who currently splits time between his hometown and Nashville, Tennessee.
