China might want to consider sending a spy balloon over South Dakota.

That’s because the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C. doesn’t know who currently occupies the office of South Dakota speaker of the House.

The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Washington, D.C. sent a stern letter to former House Speaker Spencer Gosch. Gosch, a Republican from Glenham, is not currently in the Legislature. His last session in the Legislature was in 2022.

The letter, dated this month, rebukes the South Dakota House of Representatives for passing a resolution this year “celebrating the sister-state relationship with Taiwan.” The letter, signed by Zhou Zheng, accuses the South Dakota Legislature of undermining the United States’ “one-China policy” and of being “lured and coerced by Taiwan independence forces.”
