Carrie Flaskey (Oien), age 53, of rural Trent, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Saturday, December 13, 2025. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Friday, December 19, 2025, at Baltic Lutheran Church. Interment will follow the funeral at the Trent Cemetery with a celebration of life reception afterwards at the Trent Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4:30-7:30 PM Thursday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Flaskey family for a future charitable use.
Carrie was born on April 8, 1972, in Dell Rapids, to Iver and Judith (Van Vooren) Oien. She grew up in Baltic, was baptized and confirmed at Baltic Lutheran Church, and graduated from Baltic High School in 1991. She attended cosmetology school at Nettleton College. After College she started her career at the hair salon in Younkers and then later managing Dayton’s hair salon. In June of 1998, Carrie recognized her passion to help others look beautiful and started her own hair salon, “Hair by Care”, in Baltic where she faithfully served her beloved clients for over 27 years. She also was a dedicated hair stylist for nearly 20 years for Myron and Doug at the Minnehaha Funeral Home. Carrie always felt deeply honored to serve her clients and their families one final time.
On September 15, 2001, Carrie married the love of her life, Mark Flaskey at Baltic Lutheran Church. They established their forever home on their farm with their sons near Trent. Carrie passionately tended to the farm ensuring it always felt like home. Her love of the outdoors ensured every spring and summer was special, which included her vast devotion to flowers in her multiple gardens. Her care in the home ensured that every holiday season was proudly displayed with all her decorations and antiques that she genuinely treasured. On the farm Carrie was able to live out her true passion…horses. Even before she could barely walk, Carrie was on a horse. She rode and showed horses all over the country…drawing deep inspiration, guidance and love from her sister, Wendy. She belonged to the Paint-Pinto Horse Association and Arabian Horse Association. She loved all of her horses over the years, but especially her beloved Show Horse, “Snippy”. He will forever be Carrie’s Heart Horse. Carrie had sincere devotion for animals and would continuously bring home stray animals to ensure they were given the love they deserved.
Carrie was always called Mark’s passenger “Princess”. Mark always joked where would you like to go today “Mrs. Daisy”. Whether it was on the back of the Harley or in the vehicle, Carrie joyfully traveled the country with Mark taking in the scenery. Later in life Carrie developed a deep passion for deer hunting with her husband and sons. She truly cherished each hunting trip in the Black Hills and on the farm.
Carrie is survived by her husband, Mark Flaskey, Trent; sons, Tyler and Tate (Paige); father, Iver Oien, Dell Rapids; siblings: Beth (Wayne) Hanson, Wentworth, Wendy (Steve) Hartman, Colton, and Mitchell (Karla) Oien, Dell Rapids; nieces and nephews, Ryan (Annie) Hanson, Jill Hanson, Cody (Kelsey) Hartman, Cassie Hartman, Lake (Faith) Oien, Cauy (McKayla) Oien, and Paige (Parker) Eldeen; and seven great nieces and nephews: Hyde Hanson, Laney Hanson, Dash Hanson, Riggen Hartman, Rowdy Hartman, Cash Oien, and Copelan Oien; along with many special cousins, friends and clients. She was preceded in death by her mother, Judith Oien, brother, Steven Oien, father-in-law, Rick Flaskey.
