Newspaper veterans moving to start independent ventures to fill void
Brookings city officials and community members are grappling with the loss of the community’s long-standing daily newspaper, The Brookings Register, and weighing options for what might replace it.
At Tuesday evening's City Council meeting, members voted to delay action on designating an official newspaper while the city attorney reviews state law. In the interim, legal notices will be published in the Volga Tribune, a weekly newspaper in the same county.
City Clerk Bonnie Foster said the shift from a daily to a weekly publication will add approximately 10 days to the timeline for publishing council actions, resulting in delays in official communications or possible citizen referrals.
