Barbara Jean Hexom was born November 11, 1933 in Madison, South Dakota to Joseph and Benora (Olson) Hexom. She was born into the family of the singing Hexom sisters and it blossomed into a lifelong love of music.
On June 14, 1953, she married Dale Leroy Feige in Madison and soon moved to Minneapolis. After a brief stay there, where Dale studied drafting and worked, they decided to return to a farm near Canton, SD, when a job opportunity came up for Dale. About a year later, they moved again to a farm near Rutland that allowed both Dale and Barb to begin their journey in farming as a business, partnering with her father, Joe Hexom of Wentworth, SD.
Barb dedicated herself to being a wife, mother, homemaker, master chef for countless friends and neighbors. She worked with her husband on the farm and would help him with the livestock to being the bookkeeper. When she was not working on the farm, she started working full time at the FSA (Farm Service Agency) in Madison during the mid-80s.
Barb was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Sons of Norway. She loved to spend time with family and friends, playing cards and the neighborhood come-as-you-are parties. Throughout her life, Barb volunteered at church, helped seniors with local and out-of-town transit needs, baked chocolate chip cookies and cherry pies, volunteered at Bethel, and embraced her ever-growing role as Grandma.
Barbara is survived by five sons and 14 grandchildren: Dan (Linda Liddell) of Madison SD, Melissa (Adam) Palmquist, Heather Feige, Maggie (Eric) Saugstad and Karen Feige their mother; Carolyn Feige (was married to David), Todd (Lindsey), Scott (Jill), Erica (Eric) Anderson; Dudley (Laura) of Spearfish SD, Andrea (Logan) Aytes, Derek (Evelyn); Daryl (Wil) of Vestavia AL, Christa Irwin, Tina (Dan) Ogden; Dennis (Sherri) of Spearfish SD, Chris (Jenny), Jordan (Gianna); Don (Jenn) of Sioux Falls SD, Max & Tate. She is also survived by 27 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dale, son David, sisters Colleen Tucker and Marj McElhose, and her parents Joseph and Benora Hexom.
