Banished tribal members file suit to end their exiles from Cheyenne River Reservation
More than 75 people have been banished from tribal lands; returnees jailed
Four members of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe who have been banished from tribal lands are challenging the punishment in federal court, arguing they were not afforded due process.
The four are also challenging the tribe’s practice of jailing people who were banished and then found on tribal lands. All four are currently serving one-year jail sentences after they were discovered on the Cheyenne River Reservation.
