August “Gus” Dold, age 89, of Howard, died, Sunday, December 14, 2025 at the Good Samaritan Society in Howard. A visitation was held Wednesday, December 17, and a prayer service and Mass of Christian Burial were held, Thursday, December 18, at St. Agatha Catholic Church in Howard. Interment followed at Holy Three Kings Catholic Cemetery in Epiphany with Military Honors.
August was born on August 25, 1936, on the family farm between Howard and Epiphany, to August Dold and Catherine (Eilers) Dold. He attended boarding school in Epiphany through the eighth grade and later graduated from St. Agatha High School in Howard. He proudly served in the Army National Guard.
August was united in marriage to Ruth Lucke on October 1, 1966. Throughout his life, he worked as a farmer and was also known as a skilled carpenter and true jack-of-all-trades. He had a lifelong love of airplanes and flying and even built his own ultralight plane. In retirement, August was a patient and gentle presence, spending countless hours tinkering in his workshop alongside his grandchildren—moments that became cherished memories for all who shared them.
August is survived by his wife, Ruth Dold of Howard; six children: John (Susie) Dold of Chester, SD; Joseph (Jennifer) Dold of Morris, MN; Brian Dold of Howard, SD; Lisa (Jason) Geuke of Carthage, SD; Lori (Cory) McMillen of Olympia, WA; and Christine (Joseph) Nelson of Virginia; three sisters: JoAnn Dold of Wisconsin, Marge Fleming of Minnesota, and Agnes Buie of South Carolina; 25 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, August Dold and Catherine (Eilers) Dold; two sisters, Angelita Dold and Mary Peschong; and one grandchild, Raphaela Nelson.
August was deeply loved by his family and will be dearly missed.
