Attorney General Jackley to announce indictments in prison riots, drug trafficking
Several inmates have died this year while officials crack down on drugs smuggled into the facility
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is expected to announce several indictments Tuesday related to unrest at the South Dakota State Penitentiary.
The announcement comes on the heels of another inmate death reported by the Department of Corrections. Leo Plenty Arrows died “of an apparent suicide,” the department said, found unresponsive in his Jameson Annex cell. Plenty Arrows, 36, had been serving a prison sentence for assaulting law enforcement in Pennington County.
He is one of several inmates to die at the prison this spring, including at least three who died of drug overdoses.
