The South Dakota Attorney General's Office is pushing back on assertions that an Edmunds County commission candidate was targeted for speaking out against a state-backed dairy.
After an online news article speculated that Julie Burgod might have been subject to political retribution by the Division of Criminal Investigation that he oversees, Attorney General Marty Jackley on Friday acknowledged that the property of the 51-year-old farmer had been visited by a DCI agent earlier this summer. But not because of Burgod’s public opposition to a large-scale operation in the works at Belle Dairy.
Rather, the July 30 visit to Burgod's Aberdeen office building stemmed from discrepancies involving Juliane Burgod’s nominating petition for county commission in Edmunds County and her owner-occupied tax status.
