Anita June Wheelhouse was born on January 21, 1955 in California to Alice (Albers) Wheelhouse. As a young child, her family made their home near Dell Rapids, SD. In 1958, Alice met and fell in love with, Eugene “Joe” Lyons, Joe lovingly welcomed Anita into his family.
Anita received her education in Dell Rapids, and graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1973. She then continued her education at Mitchell Vocational College. In 1974, Anita began her career with the Sioux Falls School District in the finance office, she retired in 2022 following 48-years of faithful service.
From an early age, Anita developed a life-long passion for horses. Starting with a Shetland Pony, named “Sparky” whom she taught how to jump logs then progressed to showing multiple horses throughout the years in Western and Dressage arenas. Due to her knees giving out, nearly fifteen years ago, Anita made the difficult decision to retire from showing horses.
In her retirement from the Sioux Falls School District, Anita enjoyed quilting, going to rummage sales and caring for her mother. She was a loving daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend who will be dearly missed.
Grateful for having shared her life are her mother, Alice Lyons, Sioux Falls, SD; one sister, Cynthia “Cyndi” Lyons, Sioux Falls, SD; feline companion, Jenny; canine companion, Bailey; many extended family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her dad, Eugene “Joe” Lyons in 1977.
