South Dakota will host the Norwegian ambassador at the beginning of June, part of a broader trip of the Upper Midwest that will start in North Dakota and end in Minnesota.

The trip will be Ambassador Anniken Ramberg Krutnes’ first to the state. Krutnes, 55, is a legal scholar and career diplomat. She was named ambassador to the United States in 2020 and was previously Norway’s ambassador of Arctic and Antarctic affairs.

Lest you be inclined to dismiss that posting, consider this: Sioux Falls has a tie to Norway’s Arctic holdings. One of five ground receiving stations in the world used by the U.S. Geological Survey’s satellite land navigation missions is located in Svalbard, Norway. Another station is located in Sioux Falls.
