Alvin Frank Mescher was born to Frank and Bernice (Johnson) Mescher on May 1, 1946, on the family farm in Emery, SD. He grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School. The day after graduation, he entered the United States Army, where he served from 1964 to 1967. Following the Military, he spent his career working as a Computer Technician for Unisys Corporation. After an early retirement from Unisys, he worked part time at Menards. He truly enjoyed both careers.
In the summer of 1963, Al met Jean Ann McCormick through a cousin in Emery, SD. The two communicated and dated over the next few years and were married on July 6, 1968, when Al returned from his military service. He and Jean Ann were proud of their 55-year marriage, during which time they raised their four children: Todd, Traci, Tim, and Tricia.
Alvin had a passion for attending his kids’ and grandkids’ many activities. Whether attending in person or watching via his iPad, he was their biggest cheerleader. He also loved wood working, mowing, and adapting and fixing toys for both LifeScape and the Sioux Falls School District. He was a true do-it-yourself handyman.
A strong believer in Family, Faith, and Freedom, Alvin was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion Veterans Honor Guard.
Alvin is survived by his sons, Todd (Cindy) Mescher of Sioux Falls, SD, and Tim (Holly) Mescher of Sioux Falls, SD; his daughters, Traci Mescher of Brighton, CO, and Tricia (Jason) Young of Sioux Falls, SD; seven grandchildren: Kayla Jean (Tanner) Leak; Jarrett and Easton Mescher; Everett and Madelyn Mescher; and Irelyn and Holden Young; brother-in-law, Tom (Sheryl) McCormick; sisters-in-law, Alyce (Larry) Paweltzki; Helen (Vern) Osterloo; and Nan (Rod) Browen.
