An anchor of South Dakota’s agriculture economy backdropped a rare gathering of USDA undersecretaries when federal leaders overseeing trade, food safety and farm production convened Friday in downtown Sioux Falls .

From the high-rise conference room of the South Dakota Trade Association that overlooks the soon-to-relocate Smithfield Foods plant, Undersecretary for Trade Luke Lindberg, Undersecretary for Food Safety Mindy Brashears, and Undersecretary for Farm Production and Conservation Richard Fordyce met with state leaders to discuss beef and pork markets, ethanol, exports, food labeling and South Dakota’s role in feeding consumers at home and abroad.
