A recount board in 2020 made up of Jon Hansen, Randy Seiler and Rodney Steele spent 10 hours reviewing ballots for an at-large Sioux Falls city council race. The margin of votes went from 110 to 97 when they finished on June 24, 2020.

UPDATE: Sioux Falls City Clerk Jermery Washington announced Wednesday morning that two of the five provisional ballots cast in Tuesday night’s Sioux Falls mayoral race are valid.

While those provisional votes have not been formally tabulated, Minnehaha County Auditor Leah Anderson confirmed they were split: one for former state legislator and city councilor Christine Erickson and one for state Sen. and former gubernatorial nominee Jamie Smith.

That means that Tuesday night’s results are unchanged. After more than 36,000 ballots were counted Tuesday night, Erickson had a two-vote edge over Smith, which is within the threshold to trigger a recount.

Vetting the provisional ballots was only the first step in what’s going to be a drawn-out process of legal hoops and hurdles that is now commencing.
