A recount board in 2020 made up of Jon Hansen, Randy Seiler and Rodney Steele spent 10 hours reviewing ballots for an at-large Sioux Falls city council race. The margin of votes went from 110 to 97 when they finished on June 24, 2020.

There’s a lot more to be done than just reviewing five more ballots before the Sioux Falls mayor’s race is decided.

After more than 36,000 ballots were counted in Tuesday’s runoff election, the two-vote margin between former state legislator and city councilor Christine Erickson and state Sen. and former Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jamie Smith is within the threshold to trigger a recount.

Vetting the five provisional ballots left to be counted is only the first step in what’s going to be a drawn-out process of legal hoops and hurdles that is now commencing.
