The League of Women Voters of South Dakota and a Minnehaha County resident filed a federal lawsuit Monday to block the state’s implementation of a new voter registration requirement.
The plaintiffs, represented by the Campaign Legal Center, the American Civil Liberties Union Voting Rights Project, the American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota and the Sioux Falls law firm Heidepriem Purtell Siegel Hinrichs, filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota.
The lawsuit challenges Senate Bill 175, enacted in March, which requires new voters to provide documentation of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote and proof of a residential address or lose the opportunity to vote in state and local elections. That documentation can include a South Dakota driver’s license issued after July 1, 2025, which include citizenship documentation.
