VIEWPOINT | Why we fought for Emmy’s Law — and what it means for SD

The 100th Legislative Session marked a time of historic transition and celebration. Gov. Kristi Noem was appointed U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, and Lt. Gov. Larry Rhoden was sworn in as South Dakota’s 34th governor. He then appointed Representative Tony Venhuizen as Lt. Governor. Despite their experience, they faced the challenge of leading a divided government.
Numerous bills were introduced during the session, though fewer than half reached the governor’s desk. It was a contentious year, marked by division and debate. While many of us worked to block harmful legislation, we also fought to pass laws that protect South Dakotans and the visitors who enjoy our state. One such bill emerged from tragedy — the death of Emily Gorman on Lake Madison, July 3, 2023.
