VIEWPOINT | Not GOP? Switch registration temporarily to have vote in governor's runoff
Guest column by Drey Samuelson and Rick Knobe

On July 28, the future of South Dakota will effectively be decided. It won’t happen during the general election in November but rather in a low-turnout, mid-summer Republican run-off for governor. Given the current political reality of our state — with even the number of registered independents exceeding registered Democrats by 26 percent to 22 percent(!) — it seems obvious that the candidate who wins the GOP nomination is virtually guaranteed to be our next chief executive.
That is why the two of us — a former Democratic chief of staff to a U.S. senator and a former Republican mayor of Sioux Falls, both now registered independents — are making an unusual and urgent appeal to Democrats, independents and Libertarians: It is time to temporarily change your voter registration to Republican so you can vote in this run-off. And if anyone wants to vote for Democratic nominee Dan Ahlers in the general election, they can still do so.
Johnson won’t endorse Rhoden or Doeden in South Dakota GOP governor's race
South Dakota’s lone Congressman Dusty Johnson won’t endorse either of the two remaining candidates in the state’s GOP primary for governor.
