VIEWPOINT | As a grocer, I see what SNAP benefits are spent on. Here's how we fix it
Guest column by Rep. Liz May
Recent viewpoints in TheDakotaScout.com and elsewhere have prompted me to weigh in on this issue, because I see it from a vantage point few policymakers or commentators do.
On the 10th of every month, I can tell you exactly what day it is without looking at a calendar.
It’s EBT day.
As a grocery store owner, I watch the same pattern repeat month after month. SNAP benefits hit, the store fills up and carts roll out heavy with soda, chips, candy and shelf-stable snacks. Far less meat, dairy, fruits and vegetables — the foods we all agree are more nutritious.
That observation isn’t political. It isn’t judgment. It’s retail reality.
And it raises an honest question that policymakers keep sidestepping.
