Travel South Dakota float takes award during Rose Parade
'Carved in Stone' depicted Mount Rushmore, other S.D. features ahead of 250th anniversary of the United Staes
Travel South Dakota’s float in the 2026 Rose Parade has earned national recognition, winning the Americana Award for its depiction of national treasures and traditions, the department announced Thursday.
The state’s float, titled Carved in Stone; A Legacy of Teamwork, received the award during the 137th Rose Parade presented by Honda. The honor recognizes the most outstanding portrayal of American heritage and celebrates the artistry and collaboration behind South Dakota’s parade entry.
Sioux Falls Burger Battle kicks off with record number of beefy competitors
If you thought January in South Dakota was just for hunker-down hibernation, think again. The 13th Annual Downtown Sioux Falls Burger Battle is turning the city’s core into a high-stakes culinary arena. This just isn’t a food brawl; it’s a month-long marathon of beef, brioche and bragging rights for one restaurant.
“As we kick off a new year and our nation’s 250th birthday, our goal is to share the bold spirit that defines South Dakota with millions of viewers around the world,” said James Hagen, secretary of the South Dakota Department of Tourism. “This award is a testament to the incredible teamwork behind the float and to the iconic landmarks and cultural treasures that make South Dakota an unforgettable destination.”
The float featured Mount Rushmore National Memorial as its focal point, alongside other signature experiences that attract nearly 15 million visitors to South Dakota each year. Parade viewers saw imagery ranging from thundering bison to the Dignity: Of Earth & Sky sculpture, highlighting the state’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
More than 40,000 floral elements were used in the design, including corn, wheat, sunflowers, light blue iris petals and palm bark that formed a bison’s coat.
South Dakota’s presence in Southern California extended beyond parade day. During Decorator’s Week in Pasadena, Travel South Dakota hosted immersive experiences that included locally inspired treats, interactive activities and social media-focused events designed to introduce visitors to the state’s culture.
“It feels incredibly meaningful to engage with people who have yet to discover that South Dakota is their favorite road-trip getaway,” Hagen said. “We hope that this time next year, Californians and those who may be viewing the Rose Parade are reminiscing about their own experiences in South Dakota.”
The 2026 parade marked Travel South Dakota’s second appearance in the Rose Parade, following its debut in 2016, and served as a national kickoff to celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary.
The Carved in Stone; A Legacy of Teamwork float was designed and built by Artistic Entertainment Services. Travel South Dakota is part of the South Dakota Department of Tourism, which also includes the South Dakota Arts Council and is led by Hagen.
