Legislators to vote on temporary sales tax rollback

PIERRE — Legislative negotiators have a tax cut deal.

A conference committee working since Tuesday to find compromise between competing tax cut proposals coming from the House and Senate have settled on legislation to temporarily roll back South Dakota’s general sales tax rate from 4.5 percent to 4.2 percent for four years.

“The House, it’s no secret, would have preferred a permanent tax cut, but it takes two to tango and it takes two to cut taxes,” House Majority Leader Will Mortenson said Thursday morning before a 5-1 vote of the committee to send the compromise to the House and Senate floors for a final vote.
