State officials suspect that restraints on foreign entities buying South Dakota ag land aren’t being enforced.
They are once again pushing for more reporting requirements on foreign purchases of farm and ranch ground in the Mount Rushmore State. And this time, attempts to keep foreign adversaries distanced from South Dakota and its contribution to the country’s food security entail new penalties for foreigners and land sellers.
“It’s bringing the stick to make sure we know what’s going on with our land, and when foreign owners are purchasing,” South Dakota Agriculture and Natural Resources Secretary Hunter Roberts said last month while urging lawmakers to shore up South Dakota’s already restrictive foreign land-ownership regulations.
