State: Internet outage not caused by hacking

No estimated time for fixing problem snagging services across South Dakota

A second day of darkened internet service continued to disrupt routine business, forcing the South Dakota Supreme Court to declare a judicial emergency Wednesday.

Meanwhile, there was no estimated time for when service might be restored. That meant the most routine business – such as renewing license plates, getting driver’s licenses, paying taxes, or registering businesses – could not take place. Information on many state websites was also offline.

Attorney General Marty Jackley told The Dakota Scout Wednesday that there didn’t appear to be criminal intent behind the outage. But if that changed, he said his office would prosecute the perpetrators.

Attorney General Marty Jackley and the mayors of the state’s two largest cities joined forces Wednesday to ask that $31.4 million in drug settlement money be released immediately to existing rehabilitation programs in Sioux Falls and Rapid City.
