🚨 It's time to address our inconsistent stance on global humanitarian issues! 🚨

The President of the United States has extended refuge to white South Africans alleging harm, yet we fail to offer the same opportunity to Venezuelans fleeing a brutal regime. Where is the evidence of genocide against white South Africans, while countless reports of systemic persecution and violence against Venezuelans flood our news?

This disparity isn't just a policy inconsistency; it's a glaring contradiction in our commitment to human rights. This is nothing short of a reverse D.E.I (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) scenario.

We must advocate for all those suffering from oppression, regardless of race or nationality.

Noem says “We are returning integrity to the TPS system, which has been abused and exploited by illegal aliens for decades,” -- THESE PEOPLE DID NOTHING WRONG...our govt. determined, rightly in the opinion of most, that the countries these people came from were too dangerous still for these people to return......they were give safe harbor and niether abused nor expoited anything....and yet she demonizes them - it's so hard to determine which of the people in charge under 47 is the most evil degenerate. Of course he is the most evil -- but she comes a close second. We South Dakotans should all be hanging their heads in shame for having ever elected her to anything.

Noem blathers on about "abuse" while she is the one abusing defenseless immigrants. As for integrity, she must not understand that word any better than she can define "habeas corpus". Shame on her and on our elected officials in D.C. who are blindly following the Anti-Christ straight to Hell!

A couple of facts according to the CATO Institute, legal immigrants (which would include all these Venezuelans who all came with legal status) have the lowest incarceration rates, and native-born Americans have the highest. None of the 26 Venezuelans living in SD who this change impacts are in jail to my knowledge—it’s true they could be criminals who just haven’t gotten caught, but it’s more likely that they aren’t committing crimes. It hardly seems like 26 people is a dangerous invasion of criminals—so let’s acknowledge that this change will deport people for no good reason. I feel much safer.

Dear Heart:

Todd Epp here, the author of the article. Joe Sneve edited this story. Neither he or I could find out that exact information on criminal status. We had to dig to get the 26 number.

This isn't part of the story, but I will tell you anecdotally that I dealt with a Venezuelan refugee who was working at Sam's Club in Sioux Falls. He was a clean-cut young man, maybe early to mid 20s, spoke excellent English. A good salesman, as I bought a new 5G wifi router from him.

I didn't inquire deeply about his immigration status (TPS, green card, other program, undocumented) but I think he said he had been in the USA less than a year. So if he's one of the 26, he's not in jail and working as a productive member of society.

You make good points. The problems for us, ink-stained wretches, are trying to pry good information out of federal agencies. Thanks for your comment!

Ink-stained? You are old school. Joking aside, this from a recent Atlantic article you may have seen: "Democracy is a task of data management; ours is premised on the idea that voters’ political decisions will be based on reliable information. . . . . In "Public Opinion", Lippmann diagnosed how readily propaganda could make its way into a nation that was officially at peace. He outlined how seamlessly the false messages could mingle with, and override, true ones. He argued that Americans’ unsteady relationship with information made our democracy inherently fragile.”

More than ever we need journalism that does the hard work of prying information out of federal agencies—thank you for doing the hard work of trying to provide reliable information for the public. Our ability to make good decisions depends on it. Keep on doing good work!
