South Dakota's treatment, prevention, recovery network getting $7.8M boost

Department of Social Services secretary says awards target gaps in resources for adolescent programs, mobile crisis responses, inmate re-entry

South Dakota is unlocking nearly $8 million in opioid settlement funds for new addiction treatment, mental health and prevention efforts.

And state officials are pitching the mix of grant awards that range from adolescent treatment expansion to school-based prevention and mobile crisis response as a deliberate build-out of a more complete system of care across the state.

“We have both an opportunity and an obligation to invest these dollars wisely – in a way that makes a real difference,” Gov. Larry Rhoden said Thursday in downtown Sioux Falls, where he unveiled more than $7.8 million in awards for 10 projects. “South Dakota has a lot to be proud of, including that we have the 2nd lowest overdose death rate in America – but we can always do better,” he said.
