South Dakotan fields questions, concerns in Senate confirmation hearing for Ag trade post
South Dakota Trade President Luke Lindberg nominated for USDA post by Trump administration
The head of South Dakota Trade vowed to a Senate committee Tuesday to explore new international trade opportunities for U.S. farmers and ranchers as one way to shrink the country’s agriculture trade deficit.
Luke Lindberg was nominated by the Trump administration to serve as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s under secretary of Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs. He was one of two nominees who faced a confirmation hearing Tuesday at the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry, but Lindberg fielded the majority of questions from senators.
Both Republican and Democratic members of the committee expressed concern for the nation’s ag industry. Uncertainty with international markets, tariffs and other non-tariff related barriers have hurt the industry as it seeks to export products outside of the United States. And producers are feeling it.
