South Dakota Senate takes aim at frivolous lawsuits meant to suppress free speech
More than three dozen states already have anti-SLAPP laws on their books
PIERRE – South Dakota is moving to join more than three dozen other states to short circuit lawsuits meant to stifle free speech, political activists and media.
The Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday voted unanimously to advance a Senate bill that supporters say will protect political activity from frivolous lawsuits.
They’re known as SLAPP lawsuits – an acronym for Strategic Litigation against Public Participation. Sen. Amber Hulse, a lawyer and Hot Springs Republican, said South Dakotans are at risk for such lawsuits absent legislation.
