PIERRE — South Dakota homeowners would receive direct checks under a new property tax rollback introduced in the state Senate.

Senate leaders are backing legislation to send $300 to every owner-occupied homeowner in the state. The move comes after similar legislation failed in the House last month. But unlike the original property tax relief bill that exempted $100,000 of tax valuation from a homeowner’s annual tax bill — estimated to result in an average of $300 savings for each single-family dwelling — its new iteration calls for direct payments.

“People can actually see it happening. I think that’s a big strength of the bill,” Sen. Lee Schoenbeck said.
