Sioux Falls schools see enrollment dip, uptick in rainy day funds, reading marks

The district opened the school year with 24,290 students, 86 fewer than last fall.
Kindergarten enrollment fell by 46. Junior kindergarten nearly doubled to 79. Grades one through five dropped by 140. Middle schools gained 83. High schools lost 67.
Director of Data Services Doug Morrison said shrinking kindergarten classes are driving the decline. Ten years ago, kindergarten averaged about 2,000 students. Now it’s closer to 1,700.
