The Sioux Falls School District started the academic year with fewer students but stronger reserves, while early results from a new reading program show promising gains.

Those were the three major takeaways Monday night as the School Board reviewed reports on enrollment, the budget and literacy instruction.

Enrollment dips slightly

The district opened the school year with 24,290 students, 86 fewer than last fall.

Kindergarten enrollment fell by 46. Junior kindergarten nearly doubled to 79. Grades one through five dropped by 140. Middle schools gained 83. High schools lost 67.

Director of Data Services Doug Morrison said shrinking kindergarten classes are driving the decline. Ten years ago, kindergarten averaged about 2,000 students. Now it’s closer to 1,700.
