The Lawrence County road supervisor was placing some of the state’s first speed limit signs on the county’s highways 100 years ago, according to The Deadwood-Daily Pioneer Times. Signs reading “State Lw. Speed Limit. Twenty-Five Miles an Hour” soon popped up along roadways frequently enough for all drivers to see. Warning signs were also placed ahead of dangerous curves. alerting drivers of oncoming hazards.

Cities and towns throughout the state already had a variety of speed regulations in place on their roads. The Sioux Falls City Council created a 7 mile per hour speed limit in 1903. Canton passed their own 6 mph limit weeks later, according to the Argus Leader.
